چکیده

We review here our studies on early exposure to low doses of the estrogenic endocrine-disrupting chemical bisphenol A (BPA) on behavior and metabolism in CD-1 mice. Mice were exposed in utero from gestation day (GD) 11 to delivery (prenatal exposure) or via maternal milk from birth to postnatal day 7 (postnatal exposure) to 10 mg/kg body weight/d of BPA or no BPA (controls). Bisphenol A exposure resulted in long-term disruption of sexually dimorphic behaviors. Females exposed to BPA preand postnatally showed increased anxiety and behavioral profiles similar to control males. We also evaluated metabolic effects in prenatally exposed adult male offspring of dams fed (from GD 9 to 18) with BPA at doses ranging from 5 to 50 000 mg/kg/d. The males showed an age-related significant change in a number of metabolic indexes ranging from food intake to glucose regulation at BPA doses below the no observed adverse effect level (5000 mg/kg/d). Consistent with prior findings, low but not high BPA doses produced significant effects for many outcomes. These findings provide further evidence of the potential risks that developmental exposure to low doses of the endocrine disrupter BPA may pose to human health, with fetuses and infants being highly vulnerable.

Role of endocrine disrupting chemicals on the tissue levels of AhR and sex steroid receptors in breast tumours

Breast cancer affects Iranian women at least one decade younger than their counterparts in othercountries and the incidence of breast fibroadenoma is growing in the last two decades in Tehran. Thisstudy aimed to compare the AhR levels in premenopausal breast cancer and breast fibroadnemo withappropriate normal groups. Possible associations of AhR with lifestyle and reproductive risk factorsand ...

Evaluation of photocatalytic process using GO/ZnO nanocomposites under LED irradiation for removal of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) from aqueous solutions

Background and Aim: Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs), and potential EDCs are mostly man-made, found in various materials such as pesticides, metals, additives or contaminants in food, and personal care products. Phthalates are a group of these compounds that are carcinogenic to animals and can cause fetal death and congenital anomalies. The aim of this study was to investigate the photocat...

Role of lifestyle factors of mothers on the incidence of idiopathic hyperbilirubinemia (jaundice) of their neonates in Tehran

Background: Hyperbilirubinemia is a neonatal ubiquitous condition but the role of life style factors and endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) on the incidence of this globally prevalent symptoms remained unclear. This study aimed to determine the role of EDCs and other predisposition factors in this regard. Materials and methods: At first, 120 mothers and infants (60 pairs as control and 60 pa...

Human Health Risk-based Prioritization of Endocrine-disrupting Chemicals in Water: A Perspective

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (“EDCs”, hereafter) have attracted special attention due to its reported toxic effects on children, pregnant woman and elderly. Current EDC-based prioritization approaches do not explicitly include human health risks. This study proposed a theoretical perspective on development of a human health risk-based prioritization framework for monitoring endocrine-disrupti...

Regulation of endocrine-disrupting chemicals: critical overview and deficiencies in toxicology and risk assessment for human health.

Regulation of endocrine-disrupting chemicals is reviewed in terms of hazard assessment (regulatory toxicology) and risk assessment. The current range of regulatory general toxicology protocols can detect endocrine toxicity, but specific endocrine toxicology tests are required to confirm mechanisms (e.g. oestrogenic, anti-androgenic). Strategies for validating new endocrine toxicology protocols ...
